Real ID--Good, Bad, and Ugly

The Real ID Act was intended to fix a number of outstanding issues, not the least of which was preventing terrorists from obtaining “official” identity credentials. RIDA is being implemented during a time of rapid change in the issuance practices of credentials such as those envisioned under Real ID and in the uses of those credentials in both the physical and virtual environments. This session will address some of the good, bad and ugly of the Act providing history and context for the Real ID Act and answering participants’ questions about the current status and effect of RIDA implementation as well as its relationship to various other related efforts in the U.S., such as the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC), and beyond.

Elections Performance Index (EPI)

The Elections Performance Index (EPI) is the first-ever comprehensive assessment of election administration in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Using data from 17 key indicators, the EPI makes it possible to compare election administration policy and performance across the states and from one election cycle to the next. The Index is based on the 2008 and 2010 elections and will be updated once 2012 data becomes available.
The webinar will discuss the data used in the project, the process used to put it together, and will dig deeper into the state-specific data to look at each measurement in more detail.

Emergency Preparedness for Historic Records

Successfully preserving the public’s finance, land, court and elections records in perpetuity requires public officials to assess the risks that might damage or destroy those records and take actions that will ensure their survival. Emergency Preparedness for Historic Records is designed to improve participants’ ability to evaluate risks, encourage completion of a disaster plan that improves disaster preparedness for collections, and provide insights about actions that will help mitigate potential damage. Based on a curriculum developed by Western States & Territories Preservation Assistance Service, participants will receive a simple, two-page disaster planning template to help with the disaster planning process that includes access to 24/7 emergency hotlines.

Mississippi Electronic Courts System

Many states across the country have attempted to implement statewide electronic case filing and case management systems. Few, if any, have met with success. However, in 2008, the Chancery Court of Madison County, Miss., became the first state court in the nation to be authorized to implement the federal “Case Management and Electronic Case Filing system” (CM/ECF) which has been in use in the U.S. District Courts across the country since 2001. During this webinar, Johnston reviews the history of system, gives a detailed demonstration and discusses the potential for the system’s use in other states.
